Advent Day 5: He's Tricky!

Scripture: Read through these ahead of time, and pick a few verses for the kids to read.
  • Genesis 25:19-34
  • Genesis 27:1-41
  • Genesis 28:10-15,20-22
Ornament: A ladder or a rock

Genesis 25 and 27:
  • Jacob, like his mother and uncle Laban, is tricky and manipulative. He came into the world grasping for what he wanted, and he never stopped! Because of his trickery, he had to run away from home.
Genesis 28:
  • The main passage here is Genesis 28, but it may help younger children to read about why Jacob was running in the first place.
  • Isaac has already blessed Esau, but here God transfers the promises He made to Abraham and Isaac onto Jacob.
Hebrews 11:21: Jacob's faith
  • Jacob, always looking for a good deal, makes  a vow that he will serve God if God will take care of him. He does promise to trust God, but vows only to serve God after God has provided for him. God did provide, and Jacob did put his faith in God, so that at the end of his life, as he blessed his sons, he was praising God. The faith comes in because he trusted that God would accept the blessing he gave to his two grandsons.
